Knights of Columbus

  • Overview

The Order originally began back in March of 1882 through the efforts of assistant pastor, Fr Michael J McGivney, of the St Mary's Church in New Haven CT.

Chartered as a fraternal benefit society, the Knights of Columbus now has 1.8 million members - 14,000.00 Councils worldwide.

The Order provides an innovative avenue for members to obtain economic security and stability for their families through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs. Members are encouraged to participate, but these programs are not mandatory.

Johnsburg Council 9167 answers to the State and Supreme Councils - for more information on the organization as a whole, visit the State and Supreme links to the right.

  • Johnsburg Council 9167

St John the Baptist Council 9167 was chartered in 1985.

The primary purpose of our Council fund raising activities is charity.

Fund raising proceeds are generally distributed to numerous needy organizations without regard to religious affilliation.

We especially focus our efforts on assisting the Pioneer Group Home of Johnsburg who provide for the care of mentally and physically challenged adults.

We also financially contribute to SEDOM - the Special Education District of McHenry County.

But our deepest love - our joy is in the giving of our time, talent and treasure in support of our Parish - St John the Baptist Catholic Church. Not only do we assist in many fund raising efforts, but we are present as Ushers, Cantors, Eucharistic Ministers, Readers, and members of the Choir.

While our Meetings are restricted to men only - an attempt to foster unity and fraternity - we are fortunate indeed to have a Ladies' Auxiliary. The Ladies Auxiliary is comprised of the Christian wives of our Order. The Ladies, as well as all of our family members, commonly participate in our fund raising, religious, and other activities.

Membership in our Order is restricted to Practical Catholic gentleman who have attained the age of 18 years and who are in union with the Holy See.

  • Bunker

We are looking for a detail who may be able to work with the Boy Scouts to clean out the Bunker.

It is our intention to scap the Bunker - so everything in it needs to either be retained and placed into storage at a different location or discarded.

We will then have to determine how to go about having the thing removed.

We want to do this as soon as possible before it gets too warm outside - the cooler outside it is the better because there is a disturbing auroma (mildew).

It is located on the Wakitsch Farm off Hillcrest in Johnsburg.

The detail will have the authority to determine what is salvagable and what is to be discarded.

  • Protecting God's Children

The Rockford Diocese and St John the Baptist Church and School are deeply committed in providing a safe environment for our kids. To that end, any adult working with the children is required to complete training that instructs the adult in appropriate ineractions with the children - not just for the adult, but to show the adult what to watch for as they observe other adults interacting with the children.

This training is now available online!

Otherwise, you may go to the web site and choose a class to attend.

Go to the VIRTUS website (there is a link to the right). Click on the word "Registration". Set up an accont and then take the training.

If you would like printed step by step instructions, call Steve Hubbard and he will set you up.

All K of C members who work or plan to work with children are required to participate in this vital training.

  • Scholarships

Did you know that there are several scholarships available through the Supreme Council?
